The House of Mercy, a Catholic-based humanitarian nonprofit in Manassas, launched its No Shoes/New Shoes campaign six years ago to provide shoes to children in struggling families in Manassas and Northern Virginia. To help students start the school year off right, the group distributed 179 pairs of shoes at a recent event for 63 families, surpassing their goal of 163 pairs. Forty-eight children received “fully loaded” backpacks. Parents qualified for shoes by completing at least one free class from a selection that included money management, ESL, GED Math, or cooking and nutrition.
