Weekend planner: June 15-17
Looking for something to keep you busy this June weekend? Here are some of the many events happening around the Arlington Diocese in the next few days. Vietnamese Catholics will have much to celebrate this weekend. Friday, they can attend the Anniversary of the Blessing of Holy Martyrs of Vietnam Church at 6 p.m. in Arlington. (For more information on the parish, read our parish profile from February 2011.) Then, on Saturday, local Catholics can pay a visit to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., for the Annual Our Lady of La Vang pilgrimage at 1 p.m. Saturday, local Catholics have many opportunities to hear about hot-topic issues. In the morning, All Saints Church in Manassas is hosting “Virginia’s Death Penalty: the Law, the Process, the Victims,” from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Speakers include a former executioner, the daughter of a murder victim and the mother of a death row inmate, for what is sure to be an enlightening and thought-provoking event. At St. Ambrose Church in Annandale, women can attend a talk on religious freedom from Gloria Purvis Scott, “Authentic Freedom: Religious Liberty and the HHS mandate,” from 10 a.m. to noon and all Catholics are invited to an Institute of Catholic Culture lecture entitled, “Standard of Truth: Natural Law and the Modern Moral Crisis” at 7:30 p.m. If you’re in the Chantilly area on Sunday, be sure to stop by St. Veronica Church to take part in their bone marrow registry drive. Parishioner Ed Smith (a father of two) has been fighting Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for the past year and is in need of a bone marrow or blood cell transplant. Currently, there are no matches for him in the national bone marrow registry. Maybe you could be the matching donor that can make this life-saving procedure possible. Lastly, don’t forget this is Father’s Day weekend, a time to honor your dad or any fathers in your life. One way to celebrate is by attending the Father’s Day Breakfast, being hosted at the Edward Douglass White Knights of Columbus council home, 9 a.m. on Sunday. If your dad is a classical music fan, check out The Advent Project, a locally based choir and orchestra that will perform works from Bach and Schubert at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna. Whatever you end up doing, have a safe and happy Father’s Day weekend! Be sure to check back here next week for more local coverage and event listings.
