Catholic Herald Staff Report

Get ready for a scorching few days if you’re staying in the area this weekend. According to local weather reports, a combination of record-breaking temperatures and high humidity will make this weekend dangerously hot for many in the Northern Virginia area. If you’re looking for something to keep your mind off the weather, there are a few opportunities for fellowship and education around the diocese this weekend.

Friday, St. Charles Borromeo Church in Arlington is holding a death penalty discussion, which will feature talks by family members of murder victims. The event is sponsored by Journey of Hope and will take place at the church from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Elsewhere, the city of Fairfax is hosting a Potomac Brass Quintet Concert. The free performance will take place in the Old Town Plaza on Chain Bridge Rd at 7 p.m.

Sunday, young adults will gather for brunch at St. Mary Church in Alexandria, following the 11:30 a.m. Mass. Later, they can gather at St. Mark Church in Vienna for an information meeting about a 2013 pilgrimage trip to Rome and Assisi, sponsored by the St. Mark Young Adults.

If you’re looking to stay cool this weekend, consider heading to your local movie theatre, where family-friendly flicks Brave and Madagascar 3 are now playing. Those and other reviews are available in the entertainment section of our website.

Whatever you do, be smart about the heat. Stay cool and hydrated whenever possible and have a safe and relaxing weekend!
