This summer, 11 students from Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington embarked on an unforgettable study abroad experience at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León, it is the oldest university in Spain. Students studied Spanish language, literature and culture.

For two weeks, students were immersed in the Spanish language while experiencing university life in one of the most historic cities in Europe. Before classes began, each student completed a placement exam to determine the appropriate language level. Students also participated in traditional Spanish cooking and flamenco classes, giving them a true appreciation of Spain’s rich cultural heritage.

Beyond the classroom, guided tours of magnificent cathedrals and the city’s historic streets allowed students to experience centuries of history firsthand. One of the most memorable moments was joining thousands of local residents in the Plaza Mayor to cheer for Spain during the FIFA World Cup, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Weekend excursions introduced students to some of Spain’s most iconic destinations. In Bilbao, they explored the world-famous Guggenheim Museum and admired the colorful floral sculpture Puppy. In Toledo, Spain’s former capital until 1561, they visited its magnificent cathedral, the historic synagogue, and El Greco’s masterpiece “The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.” Their journey continued in Madrid. The trip concluded with a special farewell dinner celebrating the friendships, accomplishments and experiences shared throughout the program, during which students earned three college credits from the university.

After their studies, students enjoyed a weekend excursion to Madrid. They explored Madrid de los Austrias with an official guide, stopping at the iconic Plaza Mayor, one of Madrid’s most historic and beautiful landmarks, for a group photo. They also visited the Museo del Prado to admire masterpieces by Velázquez, Goya and El Greco, as well as Picasso’s famous Guernica at the Museo Reina Sofía.
