The open house at Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria is a milestone experience for every past, present and future attendee of the school. It allows a prospective student to see what the next four years of their life could look like.
Meeting teachers and coaches, touring the facilities and learning about the history of Ireton are all part of what makes the event special. As a senior and a student ambassador, I get the privilege of assisting at an event that was so pivotal in my own life and, hopefully, pivotal for others.
I attended the open house almost four years ago to the day. Going in, I thought I knew all there was to know about Ireton, because I had three older siblings who attended the school. Despite my family legacy, I was still touring other schools in the Arlington diocese and considering my options.
When I arrived at Ireton, I was greeted by the smiling faces of students and faculty eager to tell me about all the opportunities Ireton would afford me. Walking through the building as a prospective student, not just as a younger sibling, felt completely different. I could almost see myself four years later: studying in the library, losing my voice from cheering during a pep rally and laughing with friends in the senior courtyard. These visions of what my high school experience could look like at Ireton certainly moved it up my list of prospective schools, but what really sealed the deal was walking into Godley Gym.
During the open house, every team at Ireton is at the Godley Gym for prospective students to meet. I walked in and was immediately drawn to the softball table. The coach was waiting there with a smile, excited to tell me about the program. While I listened, I felt a conviction that Ireton would be the school I attend. I knew I would play softball as a four-year varsity player, and my gut told me it would be the school where I would make some of the best memories of my life. Four years later, that’s all come to fruition.
Reading about Ireton, looking at photos and talking to people can only tell you so much about it. Going to the open house gave me a completely different perspective and I am incredibly grateful for that. Whether it’s academic rigor, fine arts or competitive athletics, there is something here for everyone. I encourage all prospective students to attend this event to see the Ireton community in action. You just might see yourself as a future Ireton Cardinal.
This year’s open house is Oct. 25 at Bishop Ireton High School from 1-3 p.m. I hope to see you there! Advance Always and Roll Cards!
