As Father Daniel Reuwer begins his second academic year as chaplain of Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, he is expanding the school’s campus ministry program to include eight teachers who will have ancillary roles, in addition to the program’s four full-time employees.

“The growth is necessary, given our program organizes roughly 20 retreats a year, offers ministry programming, Bible studies and the daily administration of the sacraments,” said Father Reuwer. “The additional staff enables campus ministry to build on these programs we offer at our school.”

The expansion includes two teachers running Bible Study programs for all students, offering to give up their lunches once a week, to help students deepen their faith lives. Two more teachers will help O’Connell build on its already strong sense of Christian service, organizing off-campus, after-school trips to different service sites to live out the corporal works of mercy alongside students.

In addition, two discipleship coordinators will help develop students’ faith life at the school, guiding and encouraging small group discussions while creating other opportunities for students to share their faith with one another.

“The best part of being at O’Connell is being a family united in our mission to bring students and one another closer to Christ,” said Father Reuwer. “I love belonging to a family that seeks and serves Christ, and this year our family is getting even bigger.”
